ESPN: Johan Santana close to throwing to batters

Sandy Alderson believes Johan Santana is very close to throwing to batters in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Santana threw another bullpen session Saturday, so those types of batting practice sessions are next in the progression.

Alderson has described the next stage as spring-training-like, although he acknowledged that needs better definition.

“Some people have been thinking of spring training as say March 1 to March 31 -- actual pitching in games,” Alderson said. “Others have thought of it as the six weeks, pitchers and catchers, etc. We’ll try to get a little more precise over the next week or so. As I said I think a few days ago, we’re not looking for Johan to ride in here and be a major factor in this season.”

In-the-know people in the organization remain skeptical of what Santana will contribute this season as he attempts to return from Sept. 14 surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder.

On the subject of timetables, Alderson said: “There’s no real precision here, as we’ve learned in a number of instances this season with respect to injuries. I think we’re very encouraged that he’s been throwing bullpens and has felt great immediately after, and days after. So I think we’re going to reevaluate where he is over the next several days to try to get something more definitive, but it’s very encouraging with Johan.”
