David Wright expected back July 22, Ike Davis maybe end of July???

As the Mets approach a crucial 17-game stretch before the July 31 Trade Deadline, general manager Sandy Alderson released good news and bad news Wednesday regarding the team's composition in the next several weeks.

While he said he does next expect injured first baseman Ike Davis to be available to play in the club's push to be buyers at the deadline, he expects to have third baseman David Wright begin a Minor League rehab assignment on Friday and to return to the Mets' lineup July 22 at Florida.

"Ike is some time away, and I certainly hope that he's going to be back by the end of July," Alderson said. "But I think, realistically, will Ike have an impact between now and the deadline? Probably not."

Still, Alderson said he does next expect either player's potential return to influence his decision-making as the deadline approaches.

"I really don't think their return will have any effect on any possible timing," Alderson said. "I think the real impact that they might have on this overall situation is their ability to make us more competitive, if that were possible, given the fact that they've got to transition back to Major League-level competition.

"Whether they'll have the opportunity to do that between now and July 31, or even the first week or two of August, we certainly hope so. But right now, I'm not sure that will occur."

Wright has been out since May 16 with a stress fracture in his lower back, while Davis has not played since May 10 due to a sprain and a bone bruise in his left ankle.
