Recap : Game 81 - Mets at Tigers - Verlander Stops the Tigers Bleeding
Justin Verlander and the Tigers stymied the red-hot Mets, beating them 5-2 to avoid a three-game sweep.
Andy Dirks went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and two runs scored and Austin Jackson added an RBI for the Tigers, who have won five of their last eight.
Verlander (11-3) pitched seven strong innings, giving up one run on seven hits while fanning six.
Daniel Murphy and Carlos Beltran hit solo homers, and Jose Reyes went 2-for-3 for the Mets, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.
Mike Pelfrey (4-7) was tagged with the loss, surrendering five runs -- four earned -- on eight hits in just 4 2/3 innings.
