Perez looking good so far in the pen

Oliver Perez’s first audition as a reliever went better than his previous attempts to remain in the starting rotation. Perez retired the only batter he faced in today's 13-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

“He threw strikes. That’s what we wanted him to do,” manager Terry Collins said. “He came in with energy, and I like that. We will, I’m sure, on Tuesday night, try it again.”

He threw five strikes in seven pitches and induced a pop out. He mixed in all his pitches except a change-up.

Perez lowered his arm angle to be more effective against left-handed hitters, who Perez would see as a reliever.

“All my career I’ve been throwing to lefties sidearm,” Perez said. “This year I’m going to use it more.”

I hate to tell all my readers... I told you he be on the roster, not that I want him to be...
