Mets being precautious with Beltran

New York Mets center fielder Carlos Beltrán be...
This morning, as the Mets inch closer to Opening Day, general manager Sandy Alderson, manager Terry Collins and outfielder Carlos Beltran expect to sit down again. So continues a spring spent strategizing ways to protect Beltran’s knees.

For the second day in a row, Beltran spent five innings Sunday in right field during a minor-league game. He went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI.

In the meeting, all parties plan to decide the next step. Beltran likely will rest Monday, then return to action with the rest of the Mets regulars Tuesday. But Collins has another idea: Beltran plays Monday and Wednesday, before starting in right field Friday night in Miami.

“I’d like to have him try to get in [Monday], so he can have a day off in between, playing with the rest of the lineup,” Collins said. “But if he thinks [today] would be the best day to have off, then we’ll go Tuesday, Wednesday.”

Or Beltran could avoid Grapefruit League games to remain eligible to be back-dated on the disabled list. That way, if his knees falter, he can return to action on April 5. Otherwise, he would miss the first 15 games of the season.

“That’s something we’re going to discuss [Monday] morning,” Alderson said.
