Mets wait for pitchers market to open, Eye Garcia as possible arm

According to Andy Martino of  the NY Daily News, The Mets continue to monitor the market for free agent starting pitchers, waiting for the asking prices for Chris Young and other low-risk, high-reward possibilities to drop.

According to a source close to Martino, they have also expressed preliminary interest in Freddy Garcia, although talks so far have been limited.

Garcia, 34, has intrigued the Mets, Yankees and White Sox, among other teams, and is seeking less than the $5 million guaranteed that the Los Angeles Dodgers gave Jon Garland this winter.

He is, however, believed to be looking for a raise from the $1 million guaranteed he earned last season, when he went 12-6, with a 4.64 ERA with the White Sox. Garcia is not close to signing with any team.

Martino says the Mets have approximately $4 million left in the offseason budget (a number the Mets say is flexible), the team will likely choose between one in the following group: Chris Young,  Jeff Francis or , Freddy Garcia, and any other established or semi-established starter.

Martino says they are not seriously pursuing the rehabbing former Cy Young Award-winner Brandon Webb, they could be forced to wait for Webb to establish the market for pitchers with injury concerns.

Once Webb signs, Martino says the Mets might be better able to narrow their focus to one pitcher.

In my opinion, at this point I would be happy with Young, Francis, or Webb. I would especially like to see Brandon Webb fill Santana's shoes for a while - IF (Big IF) Healthy... Another thing is,  how much longer do we have to wait????
